Aspire2 Clinic News Update 8th April 2025

Well, that half term flew by—and what a change in the weather! As we look ahead to the next half term, we’ll take advantage of the (hopefully) drier ground and introduce a little bit of SAQ (Speed, Agility, and Quickness) into our activity.

Most of us know how to run, but how many of us actually practise slowing down or stopping? And yet, as defensive players, we know that T = S = P = E. We rush forward to create pressure, but if we don’t slow down, we can often mistime our tackle—or even be simply side-stepped. So, slowing down is just as important as speeding up.

Let me explain what I meant by T = S = P = E: it stands for Time is equal to Space, and if we remove these two things from an attacking side, we can increase the Pressure on them and, in doing so, have the potential to force Error.

We can put a player under such pressure that, for a brief moment, they look at us—the defender—and in that moment, they may fumble a catch or knock the ball on. We know that this principle plays out in most areas of life. For example, with homework: if we leave it too late, we’re more likely to rush. While we may still achieve, we rarely achieve our best. Similarly, if we don’t leave enough time to get to the bus or rugby club on a Sunday morning, we can almost feel the pressure. And if we’re lucky enough to have been skiing, we know that going too fast leaves us with less time to react. We put ourselves under pressure, and that can lead to uncomfortable outcomes.

Alongside SAQ, we’ll share some core and flexibility activities that you can do in your own time (if you choose to). For most athletes in any sport, a foundation of core strength and flexibility is essential.

We’ll obviously continue to work on our left and right foot kicking, as well as our catch and pass. Enjoy the Easter break, and we look forward to seeing you next half term—which is the shortest of the year, only 5 weeks!

Dates for next half term:

22nd, 29th April

6th, 13th, and 20th May (£50)

Please remember: gum shield, fluids, boots, and sunblock (if it’s sunny).

With thanks,

Mike and Sue
